In 1884, in the tenth year of the Qing Emperor Guangxu, the Northern Gate of Taipei Prefecture was built and named Cheng'en Gate, which is the only historical building among the five gates built in this area by the Qing Dynasty that has been maintained in its original form. In 1895, the Japanese army entered the city through the North Gate and forcibly demolished the four walls and gates from 1904 onwards.

After the West Gate was demolished, the remaining four gates were preserved at the request of Japanese scholars. Due to the important geographical and transportation location of the North Gate, important government agencies such as the Taipei Railway Factory, the Railway Department Office of the Taiwan Governor's Office and the new office of the Taipei Post Office were built, as well as two- and three-story commercial buildings such as the warehouse of Mitsui & Co.

The Taipei Post Office is the present-day Taipei North Gate Post Office, built in 1930 by Shinichi Kuriyama, and is a three-story steel and bone structure in a neoclassical mixed style. Between 1969 and 1971, a fourth story was added to the building and the portico was demolished, and the "North Gate Post Office" wording was painted during this period.

The composition of this watercolor picture  is divided equally between the left and the right. On the right is the west wing of the post office building, a grand four-story building with large continuous round-arched windows and long rectangular windows; the sunlight from the west creates bright shadows on its façade and on the street. The brightly colored bus has entered the station and passengers are boarding in order. The building, the road, the vehicles and the passers-by are aligned at an oblique angle towards the North Gate on the left front.

The main structure of the North Gate is clear and calm in color, maintaining the circular form after the dismantling of the city walls during the Japanese era, with the cars circling around, with the Ministry of Railways building, the old commercial building of Rongji Commercial Building and the outline of the iron frame of the Taipei factory behind.
